What does Ganbatte mean? 頑張る and 頑張って are common words in Japanese. They do not however have a direct translation in English. People usually say this to wish someone luck, encourage them, or even to congratulate on a job well done.

頑張る often translates as to do your best, or to try your best.

Pretend that after someone comes across this article and decides that 頑張る has too many meanings! They then decide to give up on learning Japanese. This would be the perfect opportunity to use 頑張る.
