Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Hand Abilities In Japanese
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is the newest Zelda game in the Nintendo franchise which came out on May 12, 2023. In this game Link gets a few new main abilities he can use with his damaged right hand. Let’s take a look at what the Japanese version of Zelda calls these four abilities.
INDEX
ウルトラハンド – Ultrahand
The first ability, Ultrahand allows Link to making things by well, linking them together. The Japanese version also calls this ability Ultrahand or ウルトラハンド (urutorahando). Link in the past game, Breath of the Wild used a similar ability called Magnesis in English.マグネキャッチ (magunekyacchi) is the Japanese name which is a combination of magnet and catch.
- マグネット – magnet
- キャッチ – catch
In Tears of the Kingdom however, this new ability applies to anything, not just metal. Ultrahand actually appears to be based on an old toy made by Nintendo in the 1960s which could extend and grab things. The name is actually the same in both English and Japanese.
スクラビルド – Fuse (Scrap build)
The next hand ability, Fuse has no equivalents in Breath of the Wild. Fuse allows you again to link two items together. Making a new weapon! The Japanese version of Tears of the Kingdom calls this, スクラビルド (sukurabirudo). This name is a combination of two English words again, scrap and build.
- スクラップ – Scrap
- ビルド – build
The name probably refers to the fact that Link can build any weapon he wants from the scraps he can find in Hyrule.

トーレルーフ – Ascend (Through the Roof)
This ability has to be one of the most unexpected and interesting I have seen in a video game. It allows you to ascend, as the English name suggests, through the ceiling above. For me personally, it is reminiscent of one of the most iconic items Link had in the Zelda series, the Hookshot.
The name for Ascend in Japanese is a word play of one English, and one Japanese word.
- 通る – to pass through, by
- ルーフ – Roof
トーレルーフ (tooreruufu) is the Japanese name for Ascend. The second part of this word, ルーフ is the Japanese way to write the English word roof. The first part of the word, トーレ comes from the Japanese verb 通れる (tooru) which means to be able to pass through something. This word is the potential form of the Japanese verb 通る. Or, the word may be from the command or imperative form of 通る which is 通れ.
モドレコ – Recall (Go back)
The last of the four items, Recall is モドレコ in Japanese. This comes from the Japanese word 戻る (modoru) which means to go back. This is fitting since this ability makes things go back to where they were. This can help link in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom fight enemies, or get to the sky.
Rad. What is ‘Autobuild’ called?
Hello ColdFusion! ブループリント (buru-purinto) is the Japanese name for Autobuild. This is from the English word, blueprint.
Radical! Thank you!
