へ in Japanese, The Particle for Direction

The particle へ in Japanese tells you the direction of something. Most of the time it is the direction something is going. Also, へ shows you the direction of action or the recipient of something.  This particle is written with the Hiragana へ which is pronounced he usually. However, when it is a particle it is pronounced e. This is a fairly simple, straight forward particle to understand. Let’s take a look

Direction of Movement

First, the particle へ in most situations will tell you the direction something is moving.

みなみむかかう
to head south

アメリカへかえ
to return to America

かわちる
to fall into a river

Direction of Action

Second, similar to movement, へ in Japanese can also tell you the direction that some other type of action.

ジョンはかべうえくつげた
John threw a shoe above the wall

へ in Japanese can tell you the Recipient

Finally, へ can also tell you the recipient of something.

友達ともだち手紙てがみおくった
I sent a letter to a friend
