The Fourth of July is obviously an American holiday and not celebrated in Japan. However, the Japanese language does still have a word for it. Let’s take a look

So, to be specific when we say the Fourth of July we are referring to the United State’s Independence day which is on the Fourth of July. If we said 7月4日しちがつよっか for this holiday it would just refer to the day in Japanese, obviously. Instead, in Japanese you would say Independence Day. Here are a few ways you would say it.

How to say Independence Day in Japanese?

独立記念日どくりつきねんび is the word for Independence Day in Japanese. Since there are several different Independence days around the world though, if you want to be more specific you would say アメリカ独立記念日. Here, アメリカ means America. 

What does 独立記念日 mean?

Let’s break this word down into the following.

  • 独立 – Independence
  • 記念日 – Memorial

First, 独立 means independence and 記念日 means an anniversary or memorial. So, basically the day would mean the anniversary that the United States became independent.
