Below are 20 basic Japanese adjectives with some example sentences. Adjectives add more specific meaning to nouns. Combine these adjectives with some basic verbs and basic adverbs, and you can express even more concepts in Japanese.

Space and Distance

高い (たかい): tall
たかやまのぼった
I climbed a tall mountain

深い
(ふかい): deep
とくふか意味いみはない
there is not any particularly deep meaning

近い
(ちかい): close
えきちかくにんでいる
I live close to the train station

Adverbs for Amounts

多い(おおい) : many
ここはひとおお
there are many people here

少ない
(すくない) : few
あそこはひと少ない
there are few people over there

Comparative Adjectives

強い(つよい): strong
今日きょうかぜつよ
the wind is strong today

新しい
(あたらしい): new
毎日まいにちあたらしいことをまなびたい
I want to learn something new every day

若い
(わかい): young
わかころはよくここにていた
I came here often when I was young

難しい
(むずかしい): difficult
いまむずかしい質問しつもんかないで
don’t ask me difficult questions now

早い
(はやい): early
一日いちにちはや日本にほんきたい
I want to go to Japan as early as even one day

Size and dimension

大きい(おおきい) : big
おおきいネズミが
a big mouse appeared

小さい
(ちいさい): small
こえちいさくてこえない
your voice is small(quiet) and I can’t hear you

長い
(ながい): long
ぞうはななが
Elephants have long noses

いい  : good
どちらがいい
Which is good? (which do you want)

悪い
(わるい): bad
体調たいちょうわる
My physical condition is bad

欲しい
(ほしい): want
子供こどもしい
I want kids

うまい
: good, skillful, tasty
全部ぜんぶんうまくった
everything went well

すごい :
superb, tremendous, amazing
くるますごいスピードでとおった
The car passed with tremendous speed

楽しい
(たのしい): fun
たのしい人生じんせいおくっている
I lead a fun life

美味しい
(おいしい): tasty
毎日まいにち美味おいしいものべてごしている
I spend everyday eating tasty stuff

Learning common words is a good way to start learning Japanese. Learning common words in different word categories is even better. If you want to know where to go next, there is a special category of words in Japanese called Rentaishi. They are kind of like a type of adjective.
