Below is 20 basic Japanese verbs with example sentences. Verbs explain the action or what is happening in a sentence. Verbs are very important and with just a few common verbs you can express a lot of concepts in Japanese.

Thinking and the Senses

思う(おもう): to think
わたしもそうおも
I think so too
 
考える(かんがえる): to think
原因げんいんかんがえる
to think about the cause

分かる(わかる):to understand
意味いみわかからない
I don’t understand the meaning

見る
(みる):to see
かがみかおている
I am looking at my face in the mirror

知る
(しる):to know
名前なまえっている
I know the name

聞く
(きく):to listen, to hear
あめおとこう
Let’s listen to the sound of the rain

Speech and Writing

言う(いう):to say
なんった
What did you say?

書く(かく):to write
手紙てがみいた
I wrote a letter

Actions

なにしている
What are you doing?

できるto be able to do
それができる
I can do that

使う(つかう):to use
パソコンを使つかいたい 
I want to use the computer

作る(つくる):to make
もうあさごはんをつくったよ 
I already made breakfast

Movement

出る(でる):to go out

来る(くる):to come

入る(はいる):to enter

Existence and Possession

持つ(もつ):to hold
かばんっている
I am holding a bag in my hand

なるto become
あきらかになる
to become obvious

Learning common words is a good way to start learning Japanese. Learning common words in different word categories is even better. If you want to know where to go next, there is a special category of words in Japanese called Rentaishi. They are kind of like a type of adjective.
