基本 – Basic Japanese Adjectives and Sentences : な-Adjective

な-Adjectives are a type of adjective in Japanese. They add more information to Japanese nouns like い-Adjectives. However, they are mostly nouns that can also be used as Adjectives.

Here are 20 of these basic Japanese adjectives. You can jumpstart your Japanese learning by just starting with these few basic adjectives in Japanese.

These are some of the most common words in Japanese. Combine these な-adjectives with some basic verbs and basic adverbs, and you can express even more concepts in Japanese.

Special and Important

 

• 重要じゅうような:  important
• 非常ひような: extraordinary, uncommon, extremely
• 特別とくべつなな: special
• 大切たいせつな: important, critical
• 大変たいへんな: extremely, awful

重要な話を忘れていた
I forgot something important. (something I wanted to talk about)

非常に気になっている
it is extraordinarily on my mind

僕には特別な能力などない
I don’t have any special abilities

大切な話があります
I have something important to talk to you about

大変な思いをされたね
you had to go through an awful time (endure awful thoughts)

Adjectives for Evaluation

 

• 安全あんぜんな: safe
• 簡単かんたんな: simple
• 駄目だめな: no-good
  
• きれいな: pretty, clean
  
• 危険きけんな: dangerous

安全あんぜんな場所ばしょを探さがしている
I am looking for a safe place

簡単かんたんにできるレシピが知しりたい
I want to know an easy recipe

その人ひとはダメだ
that person is no-good

きれいな風景ふうけいですね
This is a pretty view

これは危険きけんな道みちです
this is a dangerous path

Adjectives for Determining which

 

• 様々さまざまな: various
  
• 同様どうような: same, like

様々さまざまな意見いけんがある
there are various opinions

この前まえの料理りょうりと同様どうように作つくったらうまく行いくよ
if you make it the same as last time’s recipe then it will go well

Other Basic Adjectives

• 必要ひつような: need
  
• 可能かのうな: possible
  
• 自由じゆうな: free, liberated
  
• 健康けんこうな: healthy
  
• 直接ちょくせつな: direct
  
• 完全かんぜんな: complete

急いそぐ必要ひつようがある
We need to hurry

何なんでも可能かのうになってきている
anything is becoming possible

インターネットというものを自由じゆうに使つかえる時代じだいはすごいですね
it is a wonderful time that we can use something like the internet freely

健康けんこうな体からだを保たもつことは大切たいせつです
it is important to maintain a healthy body

先生せんせいと直接ちょくせつに話はなしてみたら
How about if you try talking with the teacher directly

完全かんぜんに終おわったよ
it’s completely finished

Learning common words is a good way to start learning Japanese. Learning common words in different word categories is even better. If you want to know where to go next, there is a special category of words in Japanese called Rentaishi. They are kind of like a type of adjective.
