All Learning Methods get Boring, Switch Between Methods

boy thinking

There are a number of methods you can use to learn Japanese.  My experience though is that all learning methods get dry and boring after trying to do the same thing over and over. For that reason when you learn Japanese you will want to make sure that you have a few different methods you enjoy that you can alternate with when your current method gets boring. Let’s take a look at how to do that.

How to Pick your Learning Method

There is no easier way to say this than, pick the method that you enjoy.

This is not a cop-out. When it comes to learning, the biggest factor in not succeeding is stopping. The biggest thing that will cause you to stop is not enjoying what you are doing. So, if you are wondering where to start then start by doing something you enjoy. Once that gets boring then it will probably be because you are sick of the routine and want to do something different. When that time comes then do something else. You can always go back to your first learning method.

But What if my Learning Method is too Limited to one thing?

That is ok. It is true that learning Japanese requires speaking, writing, listening, and so on. These are all tasks you will need to learn but you don’t need to do them all at once.

When I started learning Japanese I first read an introductory textbook then I focused all my intention on reading Kanji. Once I felt I knew enough Kanji to read, I focused all my attention on learning vocabulary. After I thought I knew enough to read, I began reading real Japanese texts with help of a dictionary. After I realized that Japanese grammar was more complex than I originally thought, I started studying it more.

The point is, when you start learning Japanese you can’t fail as long as you keep studying. Reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and so on are all connected. When I was learning Kanji I was improving my reading skills. When I was reading I was passively learning grammar and vocabulary. Just get started and keep going.

Content is more Important than Method

Any method you choose will introduce you to the same words, same grammar, same Kanji. No matter what you do you will continue to come across the same stuff. All learning methods are trying to teach you the same language. In the Japanese language whether you are watching Anime, reading the newspaper, talking with a friend the core of what people are saying is the same.

If you learn only from Anime or only from the news then your Japanese will sound like Anime or the news. But, you will still be able to speak Japanese. You can always broaden your interests and read novels, watch YouTube Channels, listen to the radio, or whatever. If you are at the point where you can speak like an Anime character in Japanese then you probably know enough Japanese to be able to notice. If you don’t want to you can use different words and phrases. If you don’t want to that is fine too. It is all up to you.

if you want to learn more Japanese I reviewed a dictionary of grammar series which I personally recommend and use myself.
