Down in the basement, up in the attic, in the garage, or on our desk. Most people have some kind of junk lying around somewhere that should probably be thrown out. In English and in Japanese there are different words to talk about junk, garbage, rubbish, and trash. Let’s take a look.

How do you say Junk in Japanese?

There are a few different words to talk about Junk or garbage in Japanse.

  • ごみ
  • がらくた
  • ぽんこつ
  • くず

Let’s take a look at them one at a time.

ごみ – Garbage

ごみ is the word for garbage or trash. This word refers to the garbage you have in your wastebasket.

がらくた – Rubbish

がらくた is a word that refers to junk or rubbish that may be laying around the house or in the yard. This would be things like tools, machines or other items without any purpose just lying around. It may be functioning but just not really being used. the word がらくた does not really refer to one thing but multiple things.

ぽんこつ – Piece of Junk

ぽんこつ would be something that is not functioning as expected or not at all. For example, if you buy some old car that keeps on breaking down on you it would be a ぽんこつ.

くず – Scraps

くず would be scraps of food, paper, or other pieces of something.
