What is Happy New Year in Japanese?

There are a few ways to say Happy New Year in Japanese. They are all one form or another of あけましておめでとうございます.

What does あけまして mean?

あけまして in Kanji is 明けまして. This word comes from the Japanese verb, 明ける which means a few things.

  • Becoming morning
  • Transitioning to some new period of time
  • Enter the New Year

So basically, it is a word to tell you a change in time.

Again, the order from top to bottom would be the level of politeness in order. 良い年 means a good year, and 迎える which is the base verb form of お迎えください means to greet. So a direct translation would be may you greet a good new year.
