Today I have a personal favorite browser add-on and app that can greatly help you learn Japanese. The add-on is called 10ten Japanese Reader, which also used to be known as Rikaichamp. So, what is so great about 10ten? Let’s take a look.

What is 10ten Japanese Reader
10ten Japanese reader is as you already know an add-on for your web browser and iOS app. Basically, it is an instant dictionary that searches any Japanese word you hover over. When you see a word in Japanese you want to know more about just hover your mouse over it. 10ten will then give you a pop-up with details about that word.

Let’s say you want to hover over the word 国際空港. If you do that this is what you get:
Like this image, you can see it gives you a lot of information just by hovering over it. You can see definitions of the full word in English, other words like 国際 and 国 in this case, and that this is a noun. It also shows you the intonation of a word and the Hiragana.
How to use 10ten to Study Japanese?
Learning Japanese requires learning knowledge and skills. Knowledge would be the facts and details about the language while skills would be using the language.
There are lots of ways to learn knowledge through books, classes, and so on. Skills on the other hand take work and practice activating the knowledge you learned. Reading is one practice that helps you gain skills. By reading you gain new vocabulary, see how sentence structures work, and see how words fit in various contexts.
It can be difficult reading Japanese though. Japanese has not only all those Kanji characters but several different ways to read them. 10ten makes reading much easier since it only takes hovering your mouse over a word to get the meaning, pronunciation, and so on. The other alternative would be to search specific words while you read which takes lots more time. Time, when you are learning a language, is invaluable. 10ten saves you time and helps you utilize reading as a study method which would be much harder otherwise.
