This month is Halloween and with Halloween comes pumpkins, candy, monsters, and of course certain animals. Today, I have a list below of many of the iconic creatures during the holiday. Let’s take a look at how to say these Halloween animals in Japanese:

コウモリ – Bat
コウモリ are mammals that fly around at night eating bugs. That is right, bats. Around Halloween, bats are often associated with Vampires or 吸血鬼 in Japanese.

Cats and especially black cats are common animals for Halloween.

蜘蛛 – Spider
蜘蛛 is the word for spider in Japanese. These creepy crawly critters are unanimous with Halloween. You can see decorations with them and their spider-webs or 蜘蛛の巣 everywhere.
ミミズ – Worm
They are not as popular as spiders during Halloween but ミミズ is the name for worms in Japanese.
蛙 – Frog
Whether for use in some recipe by a witch or just to make certain people scream, frogs are often seen in things related to Halloween. The word for frog in Japanese is 蛙. This word can mean frog as well as toad.
百足 – Centipede
If you think that eight legs were a lot, centipedes have one hundred! Or, they are just said to have that many since no one wants to count.

Anyway, in Japanese 百足 means centipede. This is pronounced mukade and is one word by itself and can not be broken down. But, if we look at the characters for the word, it means one-hundred feet.
梟 – Owl
梟 is owl in Japanese. These birds are one of two popular birds for Halloween. The next being a crow which we will talk about below.
蛇 – Snake
Snakes are one animal that many have phobias about. These leg-less creatures are called 蛇 in Japanese.
ネズミ – Rat
Rats are small rodents that run around, can carry disease, and scare people on Halloween. ネズミ is how you say rat and mouse in Japanese.
烏 – Crow
The second popular Halloween animal is a crow or raven. These birds are called 烏 in Japanese.
狼 – Wolf
Finally, we have our last animal. The wolf. In Japanese the word for wolf is 狼. During the Halloween season, many people dress up as werewolves which are called, 狼男 in Japanese.
