There are a number of different Japanese words for light. Depending on the situation you may use one or another word. Let’s take a look

Japanese Words for Light

Again there are a few different ways to talk about light in Japanese. These are not all the ways but the most common words.

First, the general word used for light is ひかり. This word comes from the verb ひか which means to shine or emit light.

太陽たいよう
Sunlight

明るい

Next, the adjective あかるい means bright or light.

明るい部屋へや
a bright room

This word can also mean bright in the sense of a personality and so on.

ライト

Also, you can say ライト which comes from the English word for light. It mostly refers to actual lights like lamps.
