The Mind Map Method for Learning Japanese Vocabulary

Mind Maps are visual representations of information. They work by drawing lines between words to show they are related. When you learn a language you are constantly learning new information. Using Mind Maps to organize this information is one good way to keep new words organized by connecting them logically with related words.

How do I use Mind Maps to Learn Japanese Vocabulary?

Basically, the concept is to pick one word and then connect other related words to it. For example, let’s say you want to learn all the essential parts of a cat

猫のしくみ – Learning the Essential Parts of a Cat in Japanese

You would put ねこ in the center and then add the parts of the cat around it. Like the image below:

Then you would try to learn all the words together.

How do I Learn these Words Together?

There are several methods you can use to learn vocabulary. If you use Mind Maps you could do it online or offline. For example, you could write the center word on a flashcard and then write the other words on the back. Or you could even use Sticky Notes and write the entire Mind Map on one side.

You can even find an online Mind Map program like Free Mind. The method you use is not so important. The point is to make something visual so that you can see similar words and connect them together in your mind. Then, you use the center word as a trigger to think of the other related words. So, If you look at the map above you would think of a cat and then visual the cat in your head and look at the parts of the cat and ask your self what is tail in Japanese? Or how about ear? You could also attach verbs like play, run or whatever else a cat can do.

So after you use Mind Maps to learn some words, If you want to learn more Japanese I reviewed a dictionary of grammar series which I personally recommend and use myself.
