運命 vs 宿命 are both Japanese words meaning destiny or fate. They are mostly the same but depending on individual people’s perspectives they may mean slightly different things. Let’s take a look at what they mean individually.

What does 運命 mean?

If we look at the definition of 運命うんめい it is Something that exceeds a person’s will and may bring either happiness or unhappiness. Or just the outcome or consequences of something in the future. https://japaneseuniverse.com/2024/02/18/pac-man-in-japaneseconcepts-behind-development-to-global-icon/

What does 宿命 mean?

宿命しゅくめい is defined as fate or destiny decided before birth. So, it is similar to 運命 but maybe something relating to a past life or something. It has more of a religious or spiritual sounding feeling to it. But, it does not necessarily make it a religious word.

What is the Difference between 運命 vs 宿命?

Again both of these words mean basically fate or destiny. However, 運命 is a little more general than 宿命 which has the added meaning of something before birth. For that reason, some people will say that 宿命 is something that can not be changed and 運命 is something that is decided after birth and can be changed. If you read a dictionary it won’t mention this however and instead is a more colloquial understanding of the words. So now that you know the difference between 運命 and 宿命 it is time to learn more Japanese. If you want to learn more Japanese I reviewed a dictionary of grammar series which I personally recommend and use myself.
