富士山 – Mount Fuji or Mount Fuji-san?

Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. It is also one of the iconic symbols which represents Japan. However, in Japanese how do you say Mount Fuji? Let’s take a look.

Is it Mount Fuji or Mount Fuji-san?

You may have heard the word Fuji-san when referring to Mount Fuji. Then you may have also heard people in English call Mount Fuji, Mount Fuji-san. From here you may be asking yourself if you need to and the san or not. The answer is you don’t need the san but you can leave it on if you want to.

What does Fuji-san mean?

Fuji-san in Japanese is written 富士山. This can be split up into 富士(Fuji) and 山(san). The first part 富士 is the name of the mountain. 山 though is a Kanji character which means mountain and is added to the end of words to tell you they are mountains. Normally in Japanese, if you are just talking about any mountain it would be pronounced yama. However, when the character 山 is a suffix for mountains it is pronounced san.

Be careful not to get confused though. san sounds the same as the other suffix, san which goes at the end of people’s names and means mr. or mrs.

So, pretty much 山 means Mount so if you are talking about Mount Fuji in English, you don’t really need to add it.

If you want to learn more Japanese I reviewed a dictionary of grammar series which I personally recommend and use myself.
