Grade One Kanji Part 1: 一 右 雨 円 王
Grade one kanji are the kanji learned in elementary school in the first grade in Japan. This is the first post of a series. In this post you will learn the following kanji:
一 右 雨 円 王

一 (いち) : One
一 is a character that means one. It is mostly read as いち. You can also read it as ひと for example in words like 一つ (ひとつ) also meaning one.

一ばん (いちばん) : Number One
一ぶ (いちぶ) : One Part
一ど (いちど) : One Time
一じ (いちじ) : One-o-clock
右 (みぎ、ゆう、う) : Right (direction)
右 is read as みぎ、ゆう or う and means right.
さ右 (さゆう) : Left and Right
右て (みぎて) : Right-hand
右がわ (みぎがわ) : Right-side
右よく (うよく) : Right-wing
雨 (あめ、う) : Rain
Rain is written with the 雨 kanji in Japanese. 雨 is read most of the time as あめ which is also how you say rain in Japanese. When you use 雨 in combination with some other kanji it is sometimes pronounced as う.
おお雨 (おおあめ) : Heavy Rain
ごう雨 (ごうう) : Heavy Rain
円 (えん) : Yen, Circle
Japanese yen is the currency of Japan. In Japanse however it is pronounced えん and written with the character 円. This kanji means circle traditionally.
円かつ (えんかつ) : Smooth
にほん円 (にほんえん) : Japanese Yen
王 (おう) : King
王 which is pronounced おう means king in Japanese. It is also used in words such as queen, prince, or any other type of royalty.
王こく (おうこく) : Kingdom
王じ (おうじ) : Prince
じょ王 (じょおう) : Queen
